Who Scrapbooks About YOU?

July 23rd, 2007

I can’t even tell you how many times my 7-year-old daughter has asked me, “Mom, what were you like when you were a little girl?” or “What kind of toys did you have when you were little?” or “What cartoons did you watch when you were little?”  You get the idea.  And the sad truth is that I’m only in my 30′s but a LOT of the time my answer to her is, “I don’t remember.”  I can barely remember my teenage years, but before that?  Forget it!  Is it just ME?

I’ve never had a good memory for things that happen a long time ago.  I have a few memories that have stuck with me, of course; some good, some bad.  But next to my husband I feel like a total idiot.  The man can practically recall the moment of his birth!  :)

My point here would be that I think it is so important to scrapbook about ourselves.  My daughter is so curious about me and my life before her.  She is curious about pets I used to have and the man I was married to before I married her daddy and my relationship with my parents when I was little.  She’s very interested.  And I’m glad she’s interested.  So before I’ve completely forgotten everything I try once in a while to crank out a scrapbook page about myself.  I don’t do it as often as I would like for sure, but I’m going to work on that.

And don’t forget about your husbands.  Most of my scrapbooks are about my daughter because if I don’t record the things that happen when she’s little I’ll have forgotten those soon, I know.  But along with making some pages about me for her I want to make sure her daddy gets some done about him also.  He is quite older than me, so his life growing up was MUCH different even than mine, and VERY different from Summer’s so it’s something I really want to educate her about.

My husband grew up the early part of his childhood with an outhouse (GASP! LOL) and he told me a funny story one day about how they used to raise chickens in the backyard and a chicken got trapped down in the hole of the outhouse.  Of course, he discovered it when he went in the outhouse to go potty!  :)   When his dad got home from work, he took a rake and got the chicken out somehow.  (I wonder if she needed a bath?)  The story just cracked me up when he told me so I made a layout about it.  Wow, do I appreciate my indoor plumbing just a little bit more than before. :)

So, who’s going to scrapbook about you if YOU don’t do it?  I think I’ll interview my daughter today and ask her what she’d like to know about mommy and make a scrapbook page for her.  How about you?
